Soybean Update 395 Recent reports from Brazil suggest that despite concerns and proposals to label genetically modified crops, the main Brazilian soybean loading port at Paranagua currently does not intend to require certification of soybeans as non-genetically modified or to segregate GMO soybeans. Planting of Roundup Ready soybeans in Brazil has not been approved and is illegal.
However, it is generally accepted in the trade that soybean producers in states bordering
Argentina and Paraguay are indeed planting modified soybeans widely. Given the current
legal status, no producer would certify to an elevator that his beans contain the Roundup
Ready gene. But, if European buyers request evidence that shipments of Brazilian beans are
GMO free, Brazilian soybeans may have difficulty qualifying. |
